What is a cloud server and when does a business need one?

Before choosing between VPS, Dedicated Server and Private Cloud, we explain in plain language what a cloud server gives your business.

What is a cloud server?

A cloud server is a virtual server resource used over the internet, without buying a physical server. The resource includes CPU, RAM, disk and network. The customer manages the server, deploys applications and scales resources when needed.

Put simply: a cloud server lets a company run its website, CRM, ERP/1C database, customer portal, test environment or internal apps without buying separate physical hardware.

An ordinary server is tied to one physical machine. In cloud architecture, resources are managed across infrastructure made of several physical servers. This enables more flexible scaling, centralized management, backup and higher resilience.

The concept is not new: 2006 — Amazon EC2, then 2008 — Google App Engine and 2010 — Microsoft Azure made it mainstream. Over 15+ years cloud architecture spread from startups to banks.

What does a cloud server give a business?

For a business, the main value of a cloud server is not the technology itself but the flexibility it brings. The company does not buy expensive hardware upfront, does not maintain a server room, and grows resources step by step as the project scales.

  • Lower upfront cost. Less need to buy a physical server, UPS, cooling and a dedicated server room.
  • Fast start. A server is prepared in a short time, not days.
  • Resource growth. CPU, RAM and disk expand as needs grow.
  • Backup and recovery. Data protection and recovery are planned centrally.
  • Easier management. Several servers and apps are managed within one infrastructure.
  • Budget planning. A monthly billing model makes costs more predictable.

So the right question is not "which server is the most powerful?". The right question is: which server model fits the project's load, user count, security requirements and budget?

How does a cloud server work?

A cloud server is built from several technical layers. Together they handle creating virtual machines, allocating resources, backup, and recovery on failure.

Cloud server: several physical nodes + distributed HA storage + orchestration layer.

1. Physical servers. Several physical servers (compute nodes) are combined into one infrastructure and provide CPU and RAM for the virtual machines. Each runs a hypervisor (e.g. KVM).

2. Storage layer. Data is stored not on one server's local disk but on centralized or distributed storage. This makes backup and recovery more manageable; if one disk fails, the copy stays on another.

3. Management layer. Proxmox VE, VMware vSphere, OpenStack or similar platforms are used to create VMs, allocate resources and monitor. The customer manages resources via API or panel.

4. Network and security. Firewall, DDoS protection, VLAN, IP management and monitoring are important for stable cloud-server operation.

In more serious architectures such as Private Cloud, HA storage, redundant switches and failover mechanisms are added. If a compute node fails, virtual machines start on another node — reducing the risk of downtime and minimizing the pause during a failure.

Cloud service models: IaaS, PaaS and SaaS

Cloud services come in three models:

  • IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) — you buy a VM, network and disk, then install OS, app and database on top. Examples: AWS EC2, Linode, Epro.io VPS/VDS and Private Cloud.
  • PaaS (Platform as a Service) — the provider manages OS, runtime and scaling; you only upload application code. Examples: Heroku, Vercel, Google App Engine.
  • SaaS (Software as a Service) — a ready application, used via browser. Examples: Gmail, Notion, Salesforce.

For a business app stack the base is usually IaaS (server + storage + network), with your stack on top. When you want less control, you move to PaaS. SaaS is the end-user product.

Cloud types: Public, Private and Hybrid

Public cloud. Infrastructure is shared between several customers (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud). Pros: global reach, many ready services, flexible scaling. Cons: data residency concerns, currency risk and egress charges.

Private cloud. Infrastructure is dedicated to a single customer — own physical servers, storage and management. Pros: full isolation, fit for compliance, predictable cost, no licensing fees. Cons: higher upfront investment.

Hybrid cloud. A mix of Public + Private. Usually sensitive data stays in private and temporary high load goes to public. More complex, but often the right approach for large enterprises.

Note: for state information systems and projects with official compliance requirements there are separate government cloud platforms — for the private sector the commercial models above are more flexible.

Cloud server in Azerbaijan

When choosing a cloud server in Azerbaijan, it is better to assess the market across three directions:

1. Local commercial providers — for example companies like Epro.io offer business customers VPS/VDS, Dedicated Server and Private Cloud solutions. The key advantage: local presence, low latency, manat billing, direct technical support and a configuration tailored to the project.

2. State and sovereign cloud direction — in Azerbaijan, government cloud platforms are being developed for state bodies and large organizations. This direction is intended for state projects with official compliance requirements.

3. Foreign hyperscalers — AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud. They have no dedicated region in Azerbaijan; workloads are usually placed in nearby foreign regions, for example in Germany (Frankfurt). Those searching for a "germany server" face the same thing — for a local audience, latency, foreign-currency billing, data residency and traffic cost must be evaluated separately.

So the choice should start not with "which cloud is bigger?" but with "which model fits my business?".

For a local cloud, the hardware is physically in Azerbaijan. This gives three things: low latency (typically <2 ms for local users), easier compliance (data stays in country — audit and reporting are simpler) and manat billing (no FX fee, e-qaime compatible).

Private Cloud — the Epro.io approach

At this stage we do not yet offer a shared cloud server (cloud VPS)that service will launch soon. Today we offer Private Cloud to business customers: a dedicated cluster, just for you.

The Epro.io approach is simple: first we help the customer pick a model for their real need. For a small project — VPS/VDS, for one powerful system — Dedicated Server, for several critical systems and VMs — Private Cloud.

In a Private Cloud solution, infrastructure is dedicated to a single customer. That means resources are not shared with others, better isolation, clearer performance planning and security policies configured for the project. The configuration depends on the workload — 2-3 nodes for a small project, 10+ nodes and dedicated storage for a large enterprise.

A typical mid-size configuration looks like this:

In this structure every link and every node is redundant — the single point of failure is removed. The customer can install their own management platform (Proxmox VE, VMware vSphere or OpenStack); we deliver the hardware, platform choice and configuration by agreement.

Epro.io note — who is Private Cloud for? This fits: banking and finance (compliance, audit), large e-commerce (high load, dedicated resource), hosting resellers (their own network), SaaS providers (moving to their own infrastructure) and projects that require data to stay in Azerbaijan. A typical customer runs 10+ VMs or needs 100+ TB of storage.

What to look for when choosing a cloud server?

When choosing a cloud server, looking only at CPU and RAM is not enough. Infrastructure location, backup policy, network resilience, technical support and the billing model matter just as much.

  • Data center location. If your users are in Azerbaijan, a local presence can reduce latency.
  • Backup policy. Backup frequency, retention and the restore process should be clarified in advance.
  • DDoS protection. If the site or app is open to the internet, network-level protection is important.
  • Resource growth. How will CPU, RAM and disk grow as the project scales?
  • Technical support. Will you be able to talk to a real engineer when there is a problem?
  • Billing and contract. Payment in AZN, e-qaime and a local contract are more convenient for business.

FAQ

How is a cloud server different from a VPS?

A VPS usually runs on one physical host. A cloud server can be managed across several physical servers or a cluster. This allows more flexible resource distribution and faster recovery on failure.

Do you have a shared cloud server?

Not yet — that service launches soon. The same Xeon Platinum/Gold CPUs as VPS, the same NVMe drives, plus distributed HA storage. For now we offer business customers Private Cloud (a dedicated cluster).

What does cloud server pricing depend on?

Price depends on CPU, RAM, disk size, storage type, backup policy, traffic, DDoS protection and support level. For Private Cloud projects, price is calculated per individual configuration.

Why is choosing a cloud server in Azerbaijan worthwhile?

If your users are mostly in Azerbaijan, a server in a local data center can give lower latency. Manat billing, a local contract and local technical support are also advantages for business.

Who is Private Cloud for?

Private Cloud fits companies that need to manage several VMs, internal systems, backup policy, security isolation and high availability in one infrastructure — including banks, e-commerce, SaaS and hosting resellers.

How is Private Cloud hardware built?

A typical mid-size configuration: 3× HPE Gen10 compute nodes (Xeon Platinum 8268) + storage (HA, 2 controllers) + 2× Switch + backup server. Each compute node has 2× 10G + 2× 16G cables to different switches. Every link and node is redundant.

Are foreign hyperscalers located in Azerbaijan?

AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud have no dedicated region in Azerbaijan. Workloads usually sit in nearby foreign regions (for example Germany). They are strong in managed services, but for a local audience latency, data residency, currency and traffic cost must be evaluated separately.

How does failover work?

If a compute node fails, the management platform starts the VM on another node. The storage layer runs mirror replication. Restart time is usually tens of seconds; if the app has reconnect logic, the pause is barely noticeable.

Is backup important in the cloud?

Yes. HA architecture makes the service resilient, but backup is planned separately. Backup is needed to recover from accidental deletion, application errors and malicious changes.

Will you help migrate from AWS/Azure?

Yes. Direct import from VMware vCenter (Proxmox 8.0+ supports it), AMI export from AWS EC2 → KVM import. We have walked this path in our own infrastructure.
